Building Bhakashal - Magic Item Tables
Randomization is at the heart of Bhakashal, and that includes magic items. Like spells, many magic items in the setting are named after their creators. Many of these creators are also NPCs in the setting, so for example, Ammon Marr is the Magus Warlock of House Tairn, the author of such spells as Ammon Marr’s Feathered Doom, Ammon Marr’s Missile Inversion, Ammon Marr’s Projectile Extension and Ammon Marr’s Wall of Talons and the creator of Ammon Marr’s Helm of Inspiration. Generally, named items are newer, something like a Ring of Components would be older.
The names are meant to convey some of the Vancian flavor of the setting, Gorrendum, Mohrn the Mad, Nozzenur the Malignant, Merronshaster, Yorbil Minnighast, Brugg the Cruel, Firrwin Hollinshae, Miggen Kettlebotham, Jonrigger… names that evoke older cultures without mapping on to any one of them.
You will notice that there are no potions on this list, or scrolls. The DMG covers those sufficiently.
There are over 250 original magic items here.
Rather than integrate the tables directly with the DMG tables, Bhakashal offers referees a choice.
Decide on the balance between Bhakashal magic items and DMG magic items in your campaign. I run my home game 50/50, so first roll a d4, on a 1-2: roll on Magic Item Table A - DMG, on a 3-4: roll on Magic Item Table B - Bhakashal. If you prefer to weigh the standard DMG magic items more, you could split the roll 1-3- Magic Item Table A - DMG, 4 - Magic Item Table B - Bhakashal, and vice versa if you want to weight Bhakashal magic items more.
Note also that both Magic Item Table B and all of the individual Bhakashal magic item tables are weighted, certain items come up more often than others, by design. The tables are meant to be rolled on, not chosen from, and the weighting is meant to influence the frequency of certain magic items. Temporary items like potions and scrolls are more common, as are armor and weapons, rings, wands and miscellaneous items are comparatively less common.
Finally, compiling these has been a reminder of the nature of putting together a project of this size. The spells and items have all been created, but making weighted tables to distribute those items and spells is a considerable amount of work. It has given me a new respect for AD&D and its ENDLESS WEIGHTED TABLES, LOL.
Gygax was a beast.
Enjoy this taste of the fantastic world of Bhakashal.
